In memory of Dr. Mark Weiser

On April 27, 1999, at 8:31PM, Dr. Mark Weiser, Chief Technologist at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, passed away.

Approximately six weeks earlier, he had been diagnosed with a late-stage aggressive cancer. His period of illness was brief, and he spent his final hours surrounded by family and friends.

Mark was world-renowned as an innovative computer scientist, with a unique vision of the future. He has often been described as the father of "ubiquitous computing," a term he coined in 1988 to describe a time when invisible computers will be embedded in every day objects. He was also an avid drummer, and a member of Severe Tire Damage, the first band to ever perform on the Internet.

Mark is survived by his wife and two children. Condolences may be sent to the family addressed to: "Mark Weiser's family," c/o Xerox Palo Alto Research Center, 3333 Coyote Hill Road, Palo Alto, CA 94304," or via communications@parc.xerox.com.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Mark D. Weiser Excellence in Computing Scholarship Fund at the University of California, Berkeley. The fund will provide tuition scholarships to promising Computer Science undergraduates at the University . Individuals who wish to contribute may send checks to:
