LIFE IN AN ERA OF
CRYPTOGRAPHIC ABUNDANCE

Andrew Odlyzko,

Cryptographic abundance: Essential and (almost) irrelevant.

ABSTRACT: Moore's Law is bringing an era of cryptographic abundance. Such abundance will be extremely useful, since the same Moore's Law will be spawning a multitude of devices, the fabled information appliances. Just keeping these devices from accidentally interfering with each other, much less from being maliciously abused, will require abundant cryptography. However, we have already seen in the context of PCs that cryptography is almost irrelevant. Most problems arise because of human factors and the sociology and economics of the industry. There is every reason to believe that the same factors will operate in the future. This means that in spite of cryptographic abundance, we will continue to live on the edge of intolerable frustration with technology.
