The academic and professional skills most strongly represented within SPIA include
- document image analysis
- machine vision algorithms and systems
- pattern recognition
- information theory, source and channel coding
- mathematical morphological approaches to image processing
We not only apply these in our research, but we actively contribute to
their research fields through publications, patents, journal editorships,
conference organizing, and other professional activities.
We rely heavily on knowledge of the state of the art of computer-science algorithms
and data structures, mathematical and applied statistics,
machine learning, digital libraries, and computational geometry --
but we do not ourselves contribute to these fields except incidentally,
e.g. through collaborations with researchers (both inside and outside of Xerox)
who are active in them.
