Lichan Hong is currently a research scientist at the Palo Alto Research Center's Augmented Social Cognition Group. Lichan received his PhD degree in computer science from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1997. At Stony Brook, he worked on scientific visualization and medical visualization, leading the creation of the 3D virtual colonoscopy system. A startup company, Viatronix, was subsequently founded to commercialize this technology.
From Oct 1997 to May 2000, Lichan was a member of the technical staff at the Software Production Research Department of Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies (now part of Alcatel-Lucent). At Bell Labs, he continued to conduct research on 3D visualization and computer graphics. He also worked on projects to support web-based information visualization, using Java, VRML, and Java3D.
After that, Lichan had a short stint at a startup in Silicon Valley, helping to build a commercial system for virtual garment fitting. As a principal engineer, he mainly focused on cloth simulation and mesh rendering. Although the startup didn't last long, the experience provided him with an eye-opening opportunity to learn what it takes to turn an idea into a profitable product.
Since joining PARC in May 2001, Lichan has been working primarily on information visualization and 3D user interfaces. He served as the project lead of the 3Book system, a scalable 3D electronic book reader including features to dynamically reorganize the back-of-the-book index for exploratory search and highlight text snippets on the pages for accelerated skimming. Recently, he became interested in the areas of social computing and Web 2.0. He is currently leading the development of SparTag.us, a social annotation tool using AJAX to support low cost, in situ, paragraph-level tagging and highlighting of web content.
