When Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network was founded in 1992, the wheels were falling off the Valley's economic engine. Government and business were blaming each other for the failure to successfully compete with similar locales such as Austin, Texas. Joint Venture is a dynamic new model for regional rejuvenation. It is a non-profit organization involving a network of people in business, government, education, and the community who have joined together to act on regional issues affecting economic vitality and quality of life. This collaboration has led to a role best described as a civic entrepreneur, which is critical to keeping our region globally competitive. This talk describes the historical development of Joint Venture, its emphasis on collaboration, and the visionary role of the civic entrepreneur. Becky Morgan is president and CEO of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network. She joined Joint Venture in 1993 after distinguished service in elected offices of California State Senator, Santa Clara County Supervisor and County Transit District, and Palo Alto Board of Education; and for her dedication and commitment to the community, Mrs. Morgan has received numerous awards. Becky holds a BS from Cornell, an MBA from Stanford and honorary law degrees from Peninsula Law School and Golden Gate University. She is a Stanford Trustee, a member of the Stanford Business School Advisory Council, a director on the PG&E Board, and serves as an advisor to several community non-profit organizations.
