In this talk I will discuss past work in speech and natural language technology (and their integration) as an inspiration for future work. Topics to be considered include: changes over the past decade in goals, topics of interest, and infrastructure, recent progress in state of the art systems, and some key events that have had an impact on directions taken. I will conclude with some lessons learned and some predictions for the future. The talk will also include some demonstrations of speech technology presented by Hy Murveit, Vice President of Research and Development at Nuance Communications, a spinoff company of SRI.

Patti Price, Director of the Speech Technology and Research (STAR) Laboratory at SRI International, has been active in speech technology for over 15 years. In addition to her work at SRI since 1989, she has conducted research at the University of Pennsylvania, M.I.T., Haskins Laboratories, the French telecommunications research center (CNET), BBN Laboratories, and the Institute for Perception Research in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.
