Abstract:
"Deep Flight"; is it a new class of underwater craft or just a cool looking submersible ?
As we are about to enter the 21st century, we wonder what dramatic new developments await...
One profound development is inevitable and predictable; Earth's oceans are a huge unexplored an untapped resource inextricably tied to the health of the planet in ways that we now must understand. The goal of the Deep Flight program is to build a new generation of lightweight manned submersibles that can access the deepest parts of our oceans. Deep Flight is only one of two programs worldwide attempting to build manned vehicles for full ocean depth.
As opposed to previous generations of submersibles, which rely on static forces to maneuver (gravity, buoyancy, thrust), Deep Flight uses hydrodynamic forces on fins and wings to climb descent or maneuver: Underwater Flight...
Graham Hawkes is a worldwide renowned pioneer in the field of telepresence--remoting human capability into hazardous environments. Mr. Hawkes has been responsible for the design of more than 70 % of all manned submersibles (and more than 300 remote) built for research or industry worlwide, ever. He is widely considered to be the leader in his field. He founded and managed four high-technology engineering companies: "Precision Remotes", which develops Telepresent Rapid Aiming Platforms, "Hawkes Ocean Technologies" (specialty submersibles), "Deep Ocean Engineering" (robotic craft for underwater work) and "Deep Sea Discoveries", a commercial marine archeology company.
Mr. Hawkes currently holds the world record for the deepest solo ocean dive.
