"A Landscape Photographer in the Digital Age"

Abstract: Photographer Stephen Johnson will present an exploration of high-end digital cameras in landscape photography. Discussions will include his evolving understanding of the limitations of film-based photography and the dramatic increases in quality now possible with digital imaging. Many photographs will be shown, some comparing film with digital, and a few images from a variety of cameras. Primary focus will be on work from his digital national parks project "With a New Eye."

Biography: STEPHEN JOHNSON is an internationally recognized landscape photographer whose 25 year career has now evolved into pioneering use of digital photography to record the natural world. He has been photographing since 1973, and teaching and lecturing on photography since 1977. His books include "At Mono Lake," the award winning and critically acclaimed "The Great Central Valley: Californiašs Heartland" and "Making a Digital Book." In 1988, he was awarded a Congressional Special Recognition Award for his work on behalf of Mono Lake. His work in digital photography began in 1988 and has included software and product development for clients such as Adobe, Apple, Kodak, Leaf, Radius, Ricoh and SuperMac. His work with Adobe includes the creation of the duotone curves shipped with Photoshop. Johnson's photographs have been exhibited, published and collected internationally. He has lectured extensively on digital imaging in both Europe and the United States. His current project, "With A New Eye," is a groundbreaking, all-digital, photographic look at American national parks. His work was recently featured in Life Magazine and on the Discovery Channel's "Discovery News."
